What this calculator estimates
This calculator is a first-pass estimator for import duty, import VAT, and import withholding based on a customs value. It is not a substitute for an official tariff determination or a broker calculation, but it is useful for checking whether the landed-cost profile is broadly acceptable before goods are shipped.
How the formula works
The calculation starts with the customs value or CIF value. Duty is applied first. Import VAT and withholding are then commonly applied on the customs base plus duty, which means the tax base is not identical to the starting value. That is why even a small change in the tariff rate can materially shift the total import-tax estimate.
Inputs that must be verified
- the correct HS code
- the official BTKI tariff rate
- Lartas and certification requirements
- the applicable import-tax basis
When this output should not be treated as final
Do not use the result as a final figure if the goods qualify for incentives, FTA treatment, exemptions, additional levies, post-border controls, or if the HS classification is still uncertain. In those cases you need to go back to BTKI, INSW, and the import documentation set.
How to use the result properly
Use the estimate for budgeting, pricing, and early-stage screening. Then open the linked HS page, review the official BTKI chapter, check Lartas, and make sure the business activity using the goods is aligned with the correct KBLI layer.
Common mistakes
The most common mistakes are using an over-broad HS code, ignoring Lartas, and assuming all import taxes are applied on the same base. Another mistake is treating the calculator like a final quote. It is only a planning tool that helps operations, finance, and procurement teams align on a realistic starting number.
